If you've been hearing about GLP-1 medications — semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) — and wondering whether they're right for you, you're not alone. These medications have changed the landscape of medically supervised weight loss. And if you live in Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Parrish, or Ellenton, you now have access to a GLP-1 weight loss program that doesn't require jumping between specialists, navigating insurance denials, or paying spa-style clinic prices.

At Meadow Primary Care, we offer medically supervised GLP-1 weight loss management for active members. Meriem handles the evaluation, prescribing, and all ongoing oversight — while you source your medication through our compounding pharmacy partner and pay for labs and medication separately. Here's exactly how it works.

What Are GLP-1 Medications?

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1 — a naturally occurring hormone that helps regulate blood sugar, slow digestion, and signal to your brain that you're full. GLP-1 receptor agonist medications mimic this hormone, which is why they're so effective at reducing appetite and supporting sustained weight loss.

The most well-known names are:

Clinical trials have shown average weight loss of 15–22% of body weight with these medications when combined with lifestyle changes — numbers that far exceed what most people can achieve through diet and exercise alone. They're not a shortcut. They're a clinically proven tool that, used responsibly under medical supervision, helps your body work the way it's supposed to.

Important to Know

GLP-1 medications are prescription medications that require a proper medical evaluation before prescribing. At Meadow, we run labs first and have an in-person visit before starting any medication — because your safety matters more than speed.

Who Is a Good Candidate for GLP-1 Therapy?

GLP-1 medications are FDA-approved for adults with:

Beyond the clinical criteria, GLP-1 therapy tends to work best for people who have genuinely struggled to lose weight despite consistent effort — not because of willpower, but because of underlying metabolic factors. If your hunger signals are dysregulated, your body resists fat loss, or your blood sugar fluctuates in ways that drive cravings, GLP-1s address the root cause in a way that calorie restriction alone cannot.

GLP-1s are not appropriate for everyone. People with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 should not take these medications. We review all of this during your evaluation — it's why the in-person visit matters.

How the Meadow GLP-1 Weight Loss Program Works

The foundation of our program is your Meadow primary care membership — that's what gives you access to Meriem as your prescribing provider and ongoing weight loss manager. Here's the full picture:

1

Active Membership + Initial Lab Work

You must have an active Meadow Primary Care membership to participate in the GLP-1 program — this is what covers Meriem's time, oversight, and ongoing management. Before your first appointment, we order comprehensive labs: thyroid function, blood sugar, lipid panel, kidney and liver function, and other markers relevant to GLP-1 eligibility. Lab costs are the patient's responsibility and billed separately through our lab partner at discounted direct-pay rates.

2

In-Person Evaluation at Our Ellenton or Lakewood Ranch Office

Your first visit is in person. Meriem reviews your lab results, health history, current medications, and weight loss goals. She'll discuss whether GLP-1 therapy is appropriate, which medication fits your profile, and what realistic expectations look like. This is a 30+ minute appointment — not a checkbox intake.

3

GLP-1 Prescription & Medication

If you're a good candidate, Meriem prescribes your GLP-1 medication. You'll fill the prescription through your pharmacy — medication costs vary depending on the medication, dose, and your insurance or discount card coverage. Meriem will discuss options and help you navigate the most cost-effective path. You'll start at a low dose and titrate up gradually, which is the standard protocol to minimize side effects like nausea.

4

Ongoing Telehealth Follow-Ups

After your initial in-person visit, all follow-up appointments are conducted via telehealth — from your phone or computer, on your schedule. Meriem monitors your progress, adjusts dosing, addresses side effects, and checks in on how you're feeling. Follow-up labs are repeated periodically to ensure everything is tracking well.

How This Compares to Other Options in Manatee County

If you've looked into GLP-1 programs in the Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch area, you've probably encountered weight loss clinics, urgent care practices, and telehealth-only platforms. Here's how they compare to the Meadow approach:

What You Get Meadow Primary Care Weight Loss Clinic / Urgent Care
Labs Patient responsibility — discounted direct-pay rates Often billed separately at higher rates
In-person evaluation Yes — 30+ min visit Varies; often minimal
Ongoing provider relationship Yes — same provider every time Rotating staff or async only
Medication Patient pays — via compounding pharmacy partner Separate cost, often at higher prices
Telehealth follow-ups Yes — unlimited Limited or per-visit billed
Full primary care access Yes — everything included in membership No — weight loss only
Medicare accepted Yes — $0 membership Rarely

The biggest difference is the relationship. Weight loss clinics and urgent care practices are often transactional — you pay per visit or per service, rotate through providers, and don't have continuity of care. At Meadow, Meriem is your provider for everything. She knows your full health picture, not just your weight goal. That matters when you're on a medication that affects your whole metabolic system.

What About Side Effects?

The most common side effects of GLP-1 medications are gastrointestinal — nausea, mild bloating, and changes in appetite. These typically occur early in treatment and diminish as your body adjusts, especially when doses are titrated gradually (which is standard protocol).

Some patients experience no significant side effects at all. Others need adjustments to dose timing, injection technique, or meal composition. Because you have direct access to Meriem by text or telehealth throughout your membership, you're never waiting weeks to address a concern. You text her, she responds.

A Note on Compounded Semaglutide

You may have seen advertisements for much cheaper compounded semaglutide online. While the FDA allowed compounding during the Wegovy shortage, the shortage status has changed and regulations are tightening. We only prescribe FDA-approved medications — not because we're being conservative, but because your safety depends on medications with verified potency and purity. We'll always be honest with you about what we're prescribing and why.

Do You Need Insurance?

No. Our GLP-1 weight loss membership is available to anyone — with or without insurance. Insurance coverage for weight loss medications is inconsistent and often requires extensive prior authorization, step therapy, and documentation. Because Meriem manages your prescription and monitors your progress as part of your primary care membership, you get consistent oversight without navigating insurance prior authorizations or bouncing between providers. You pay for your medication through our compounding pharmacy partner — Meriem handles everything clinical.

If you have a PPO plan, you may be able to submit a superbill for partial reimbursement — ask us about that during your evaluation. Medicare patients are welcome; our standard $0 Medicare membership applies.

Is This Right for You?

If you've been thinking about GLP-1 therapy, or you've tried it through another provider and want a more comprehensive, relationship-based experience — we'd love to talk. The best way to find out if you're a candidate is a real conversation with Meriem, not a five-question online quiz.

You can text us directly at (941) 340-1649, call the same number, or start the signup process at meadowprimarycare.com/pricing. Both our Ellenton/Parrish and Lakewood Ranch locations are seeing new weight loss patients now.
