Sports physicals are one of the most time-sensitive health needs for student-athletes in Lakewood Ranch and the surrounding Manatee County area. Schools and athletic programs require them before a child can participate in sports — and they often come up at the last minute, right before the season starts. Finding a provider who can see your child quickly, without a weeks-long wait, and without insurance, is harder than it should be.
At Meadow Primary Care, sports physicals are included in your child's membership and available same-day. Here's what you need to know.
What Is a Sports Physical?
A sports physical — formally called a Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation (PPE) — is a medical exam that assesses a student's physical readiness to participate in organized sports. It typically includes:
- Review of medical history, past injuries, and family cardiovascular history
- Blood pressure and heart rate measurement
- Height, weight, and BMI
- Cardiovascular assessment (listening for murmurs or irregularities)
- Musculoskeletal assessment (range of motion, prior injury evaluation)
- Vision screening
- Neurological assessment if history of concussion
- EKG (electrocardiogram) — now required for high school athletes in Florida; Meadow has in-office EKG capability
The visit results in a signed form your school or athletic program requires. Most Florida schools use the FHSAA Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation form.
Florida Now Requires EKGs for High School Athletes
As of recent Florida legislation, high school athletes are required to have an electrocardiogram (EKG) as part of their Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation. An EKG measures the electrical activity of the heart and screens for underlying cardiac conditions — like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or arrhythmias — that can be risk factors during intense athletic activity.
This requirement matters because sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in student athletes during competition, and many of the conditions that cause it are silent — no symptoms until a major event. The EKG requirement is designed to catch these before a student ever steps on the field.
Meadow Primary Care has in-office EKG capability. Your student-athlete's sports physical and EKG can be done in a single visit — no separate appointment at a cardiology office, no extra scheduling, no additional facility fees. For Meadow members, this is included in your membership.
EKG + Sports Physical — One Visit
Florida high school athletes now need both a standard PPE physical and an EKG for clearance. Meadow does both in-office in one appointment. Text us at (941) 340-1649 to schedule.
Why Same-Day Access Matters for Sports Physicals
Every fall, families across Manatee County scramble to get their student-athletes cleared before the season starts. The same-day availability that makes Meadow valuable for sick visits is equally valuable for physicals — your child doesn't miss the first week of practice because you couldn't get an appointment in time.
Members can often schedule a sports physical with 24-48 hours notice. For families with multiple children playing multiple sports, this is a significant quality-of-life improvement over waiting three weeks at a pediatric practice or paying $75+ per visit at an urgent care clinic.
Sports Physicals Without Insurance
Many urgent care clinics in the Lakewood Ranch area charge $40–$75 for a sports physical, even for something as quick as a clearance exam. For Meadow members, sports physicals are included in your membership — no separate charge. For non-members who want a cash-pay option, contact us to discuss pricing.
Physicals for the Whole Team
If you're a coach, team parent, or school administrator looking to coordinate physicals for a group of student-athletes, we can often accommodate group scheduling. Text us at (941) 340-1649 to discuss options.
Sports Physicals Are Just the Beginning
Meadow members get more than a clearance signature. Meriem takes the time to review your child's musculoskeletal history, discuss prior concussions or injuries honestly, and flag anything that warrants follow-up. If she has a concern, she tells you — not just because it's her job, but because she's your child's ongoing primary care provider, not a one-time sports physical assembly line.
If your child ages 2–25 doesn't have a primary care home in Lakewood Ranch, Parrish, Bradenton, or Ellenton — we'd love to be it. Memberships start at $59/month and cover unlimited visits including sports physicals, school physicals, sick visits, and preventive care. Text us at (941) 340-1649.
