Florida Now Requires EKGs for High School Athletes

As of recent Florida legislation, high school athletes are required to have an electrocardiogram (EKG) as part of their Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation. An EKG measures the electrical activity of the heart and screens for underlying cardiac conditions — like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or arrhythmias — that can be risk factors during intense athletic activity.

This requirement matters because sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in student athletes during competition, and many of the conditions that cause it are silent — no symptoms until a major event. The EKG requirement is designed to catch these before a student ever steps on the field.
