Every October, tens of thousands of seasonal residents make their way back to Lakewood Ranch, Bradenton, and the greater Manatee County area. The weather is the obvious draw. But one thing that catches a lot of snowbirds off guard every year is healthcare.

You left a provider up north. Your prescriptions are tied to that provider. Medicare Open Enrollment just opened. And if something comes up health-wise before you have a Florida doctor, you are looking at urgent care or the ER, neither of which is how you want to start your season.

Here is how to get your Florida healthcare set up before you actually need it.

The prescription problem most snowbirds hit

This is the most common issue we hear from seasonal patients. You arrive in Florida, your prescription runs low, and your home-state provider is in a different time zone and not licensed in Florida. Some medications, especially controlled substances like ADHD medications, anxiety medications, and certain pain medications, cannot legally be prescribed by an out-of-state provider once you are residing in Florida.

The fix is simple but timing-dependent: establish care with a Florida-licensed provider before you run out. At Meadow, we can do a telehealth visit before you even leave home if you are a Florida resident or establishing Florida as your primary residence for the season. Once you are established, prescription continuity is seamless.

Controlled Substances Require Extra Planning

Florida has specific rules about prescribing controlled substances to new patients. If you take any Schedule II-IV medications, Adderall, Xanax, Ambien, certain pain medications, plan to establish Florida care before your supply runs low. Do not wait until you are almost out.

How Medicare works for snowbirds

If you have Original Medicare (Parts A and B), you are in good shape. Original Medicare works nationwide with no network restrictions, any provider who accepts Medicare can see you, in any state. Meadow Primary Care accepts Medicare and bills directly, so there is no membership fee for Medicare patients.

If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, things are more complicated. Most Medicare Advantage plans are regional networks. Your Florida providers may or may not be in-network, and out-of-network care on an Advantage plan typically means significantly higher costs (except for emergencies). Before you arrive:

Medicare Open Enrollment Is Open Now

October 15 through December 7 is your window to switch Medicare plans. If your current plan restricts your Florida provider options, now is the time to switch to Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan with better coverage in Manatee County. See our full Medicare Open Enrollment guide for details.

Why establishing care before you need it matters

The difference between a patient with an established provider and one without is the difference between a same-day appointment and an ER visit. When you have a sinus infection, a blood pressure reading that concerns you, or a prescription question on a Saturday morning, an established patient at Meadow texts Meriem and gets an answer. A patient without a provider drives to urgent care and waits two hours.

Beyond convenience, there are real clinical reasons to establish care proactively. Meriem needs to know your baseline before something changes. Your lab values, your medication list, your history of chronic conditions, your surgical history, these things take one good intake appointment to establish, and they make every subsequent interaction faster and better.

What Meadow offers seasonal residents

We have built Meadow to serve the full Manatee County community, which includes a significant seasonal population. A few things that matter specifically for snowbirds:

A simple pre-arrival checklist

1

Check your Medicare plan network

If you have Medicare Advantage, confirm your Florida providers are in-network. Open Enrollment runs through December 7 if you need to switch.

2

Take stock of your prescriptions

Make a list of every medication, the dose, and when you will run out. Note any controlled substances specifically. Plan to have a Florida provider established before any of those run low.

3

Request your records from your home-state provider

A records transfer can take a few weeks. Start the request before you leave. Ask specifically for your medication list, recent lab results, and any specialist notes from the past year.

4

Establish Florida care before you arrive

Text or call Meadow at (941) 340-1649. We can set up a telehealth visit while you are still up north and have your Florida care ready when you land.
